Scientific illustrations to keep silent about

‘Scientific illustrations to keep silent about’ was an intervention in Ateneum, Finnish National Gallery, during blockbuster exhibition of Von Wright Brothers in Ateneum in October 2017. The intervention was realised part of project Freedom Portal by Third Space. It was accessible in Ateneum’s open wireless network for approximately one month from the beginning of the exhibition onwards.

The text of the intervention:

The Von Wright brothers

The artist brothers Magnus, Wilhelm and Ferdinand von Wright are known as painters of portraits, landscapes, and nature subjects, especially birds, and as creators of scientific illustrations of flora and fauna. Magnus illustrated scientific researches of anatomist, zoologist and doctor Evert Julius Bonsdorff. Bonsdorff was a remarkable Finnish scientist, who had studied with world-famous Swedish race scientist Anders Retzius, inventor of the skull index. Inspired by Retzius, Bonsdorff went into comparative anatomy and initiated the human remains collections in the Helsinki University, which by the 1930s had grown to 1 500 skulls from all around the world. Magnus helped Bonsdorff in growing the anatomical collections. Wilhelm von Wright was working in Sweden illustrating race scientific researches of Anders Retzius. One of Wilhelm’s drawings is the portrait of Rufina, indigenous girl whose family’s land was taken by the European colonisers. She was bought in an auction in Buenos Aires and sent to Sweden in 1843, at the age of 10, on request of Retzius for some “specimens” of indigenous people from the area. Retzius would have preferred to receive a boy, but the funds available were enough only for purchase of a girl. Rufina was measured in Stockholm by Retzius and drawn by Wilhelm von Wright. Afterward, she was sent to Gothenburg as a servant in an upper class family. All that is known of her later stages in life is that she started to accept Christianity. The drawings by Wilhelm von Wright of 10 years old Rufina, just having arrived in Sweden, are published in Retzius’ pivotal book ‘Ethnologische Schriften’, Stockholm 1864. Also cast was made of Rufina’s face, which was exhibited in the Ethnology/Science of Human Races Department of the Chrystal Palace in 1854 in display of people’s types, under title ‘Botocudos and Pampa girl’.

The von Wright Brothers exhibition is part of the programme for the centenary of Finland’s independence.

Veljekset Von Wright

Magnus auttoi Bonsdorffia kasvattamaan anatomista kokoelmaa. Wilhelm von Wright sen sijaan työskenteli Ruotsissa kuvittaen Anders Retziuksen rotutieteellistä tutkimusta. Eräs Wilhelmin piirustuksista on Rufinan muotokuva.

Veljekset von Wright -näyttely on osa Suomen itsenäisyyden satavuotisjuhlavuoden ohjelmaa.
